How To Enhance A Websites Visibility?

There are a multitude of things you can do to grab attention on the search results page, and attract more visitors to your website. Your efforts must go beyond optimization and strategic keyword usage towards giving a fulfilling user experience to site visitors.

Working on these 5 crucial areas assure that you get the best results.

1.  Content
See what elements of your content are visible to the search engines. Use Google's text cache of a web page or SEO-browser.com or the MozBar tool.

A.  HTML text format: The Most Indexable Content
Search engine crawlers tend to ignore non-text content viz. images, Flash files, Java applets, etc.  So the easiest way to ensure visibility to search engines is to use HTML text format on webpages.

# It doesn’t imply you should not use non-textual content. But for best results it is important to care for certain things that we shall be discussing in our article on image optimization.

B.  Keyword Usage
Keywords should be used naturally and strategically at the following locations:
  • Title tag
  • Near the top of the page
  • Twice or thrice in the body copy on the page
  • Alt attribute of an image
  • Once in the URL and the meta description tag
# Forget about keyword density - it is not a part of modern ranking algorithms. In lieu, you should focus on content quality, semantics and relevance.

C.  Duplicate Versions of Content
To deal with duplicate content issue, you can create a Canonical URL Tag. Canonicalization helps you organize your content such that every unique piece of content has only one URL. Plus, the target of the tag should point to the master URL telling the engines that multiple pages should be considered as one.

2.   Title Tag
Title tag should be an accurate, concise description of a page's content. It should also be descriptive, readable and compelling to help grab attention on the search results page, and attract more visitors to your site.

D.   Length - Stick to the limit of 65-75 characters. However, if multiple keywords (or long keyword phrase) are targeted, go longer.

E.   Keywords use
  • Important ones should be closer to the start of the title tag
  • End every title tag with a brand name mention
3.   Meta Tags
A.   Meta Robots tag
These control search engine crawler activity (for all of the major engines) on a per-page level.
•  index/noindex
Inform engines to crawl a page & keep in the engines' index for retrieval
•  follow/nofollow
Inform the engines to crawl links on the page
•  noarchive
Restrict search engines from saving a cached copy of the page.
•  nosnippet
Restrict search engines from displaying snippets
•  noodp/noydir
Specialized tags that restrict engines from displaying snippets from the Open Directory Project (DMOZ) or the Yahoo! Directory

B.   X-Robots-Tag
Used for content within non-HTML files, like images.

C.   Meta description Tag
Serves as an advertising copy. These are generally 160 characters long.

D.   Meta keywords Tag
No longer valuable or important to search engine optimization

4.   Links
A.   Use standard HTML links in the right format.
Link should have a start, referral location, visible anchor text and a closure – all in the perfect order. Then only it is eminently understandable to the search engine crawlers and then only they add it to the engines' link graph of the web. It is then used to calculate Google's PageRank and index contents of the referenced page.

#Do not use links embedded within Javascript. Links in Flash, Java and other plug-ins are inaccessible for search engines.
# Search engines even tend to ignore content (aka links) accessible through search forms, password-protected content and pages with thousands of links.

B.   Nofollow links aren’t that bad
They do not carry as much weightage as normal links and are interpreted as HTML text. Yet we believe they are a natural part of a diverse link profile and should be used as and when required. Moreover, these help stop automated blog comment, guest book, and link injection spam, should be used.

5.   URLs
The addresses for documents on the web - are of great value from a search perspective. Guidelines for URL creation:
  • They should be appropriately descriptive and of minimize length and trailing slashes
  • Should be static - human-readable and without lots of parameters, numbers, and symbols
  • Should have hyphens to separate words
